Plans for the redevelopment of the 30 acres of land around Bonnie Doon Mall, including the mall itself, are underway. The land is owned by Morguard, a real estate company based in Toronto, which is planning major changes for the area, into what they call a “mixed-use transit oriented development with a range of uses”. The redevelopment is planned to take place in phases, and is projected to last up to 30 years.
No plans have been determined yet, and an ‘inspiration centre’ is now open at the South end of the mall. This will be open to the public, and will have information available as it is released. For now, Morguard is seeking public input on what people would like to see on this land. Input can be provided in-person at the inspiration centre, or through their website http://connectbonniedoon.com/
There are five guiding principles for the redevelopment, which aims to create a community in the area that will draw people in from around Edmonton. These principles are: Sustainable Development, Healthy Streets, Distinct and Authentic Design, Inclusive Public Spaces and Evolve Bonnie Doon. Examples of what these principles mean can be found in the Inspiration Centre.
If you would like to have input into the early stages of this process, including the overarching intent of the design, you are encouraged to provide input through the avenues listed above. An open house is also scheduled for January 30, 2018.
